Buying Your Own Health Insurance in Tennessee?

Learn About Your Options Before Choosing a Plan

Private Health Insurance for Self-Employed Tennesseans

More Coverage Options in Tennessee

If you are self-employed, own a small business, work as an independent contractor, are leaving employer coverage, or simply purchase health insurance on your own, you may have more than one type of coverage available.

The right choice depends on your situation.

Tennessee residents may have access to Marketplace plans, private health insurance plans, supplemental coverage and other options.

Our job is to help you understand what is available, how the plans differ and which options may be

worth considering.

Who Should Consider Private Health Insurance?

Private health insurance may be worth exploring for people who:

  • Purchase their own health coverage
  • Are self-employed or independent contractors
  • Own a small business
  • Are leaving employer-sponsored coverage
  • Are considering COBRA
  • Want to compare alternatives to their current individual health plan
  • Meet the health and underwriting requirements of the available private plans

Private medically underwritten plans are not appropriate for everyone.

That is why we begin by understanding your situation rather than trying to place everyone into the same type of coverage.

Considering COBRA?

Leaving an employer can create an important health insurance decision.

COBRA may allow you to continue your existing employer-sponsored coverage for a period of time, which can be particularly valuable when maintaining the same doctors, treatment or benefits is important.

But COBRA may not be the only option available.

Depending on your circumstances, you may also want to compare:

  • ACA Marketplace coverage
  • Private individual health insurance
  • Coverage available through a spouse
  • Other qualifying health-plan options

Before enrolling, it can be helpful to understand the differences in premiums, networks, deductibles, benefits and eligibility.

What Is Medically Underwritten Health Insurance?

Some private health insurance plans use medical underwriting.

This means the insurance company evaluates an applicant's health history and other underwriting information when determining eligibility.

Because these plans have qualification requirements, they are not appropriate or available for every applicant.

For people who qualify, however, private coverage may provide another alternative to consider when shopping for individual health insurance.

We can explain the underwriting process before you decide whether applying makes sense.

What About PPO Networks?

Provider access matters.

We offer access to plans that may utilize large PPO networks, depending on the specific product and applicant eligibility.

Before enrolling, we can help you review important questions such as:

  • Is my doctor in the network?
  • What hospitals participate?
  • How does out-of-network care work?
  • What is my deductible?
  • What is the maximum financial exposure?
  • Are prescriptions covered?
  • Are there benefit limitations or exclusions?

We want you to understand the plan — not simply its monthly premium.

Private Insurance or Marketplace Coverage?

Neither option is automatically better.

Marketplace plans can be an excellent choice, particularly for individuals and families who qualify for significant premium tax credits or who need guaranteed-issue coverage.

Private medically underwritten coverage can provide another alternative for eligible applicants.

The objective is not to force one solution.

It is to understand what is available and compare the choices.

Submitting a request does not obligate you to purchase coverage. Eligibility, benefits, premiums, exclusions and availability vary by plan and applicant. Private medically underwritten coverage is subject to underwriting approval.
